How-To

A quick guide on how to use our site.

The Peace and Security Data Hub allows both the public and our colleagues at the UN to search and get data. The Hub combines data created by the pillar with other frequently used data sources on Peace and Security.

Quick tips for Navigation of this Site

Explore

3. If you’re not sure where to start, visit our Browse by Theme to get an idea of the data topics in the Peace and Security realm of the United Nations. You can also browse through our Data Stories for illustrations of how data has been used for decision-making by our peers.

Get the Data

4. All our internal datasets are available to query in CSV, XML, and JSON format via API. Use these formats to either download a spreadsheet, or pull the data directly into whatever tool you are using.

Metadata should be your key source

5. Metadata is the information about the data you find. This includes the section called “About the Dataset” when you click on an internal dataset. This will tell you things like what’s in the dataset and when it was last updated.

6. Data can be complex and hard to understand without an explanation for certain terms. When you navigate to the Data Preview section of one of our internal datasets, you will have the option to look up the definition of a column or even a term within the table.

Pull our data into Excel, Power BI, or R using the API

APIs are a powerful way to get data from online sources. If you are using our data for a recurring report, for example, using an API can help automatically refresh your report whenever we update the data, without you having to come back to our website to get it again.
